FAQs

Who makes this stuff?
I do! I'm Laura, a small-scale hobby potter. I handle every step of the process myself—from making, firing, and glazing to sanding, photographing, listing, packing, and shipping. Just me and a lot of clay and glaze dust.

Why does each piece look a little different?
Because that’s the magic of handmade pottery! Slight variations in shape, size, glaze, and finish are part of what makes each piece unique. These quirks are a celebration of the craft—and a reminder that you're holding something truly one of a kind.

Do you take custom orders?
Yes, let’s chat! Email me at happywhalepottery@gmail.com with what you have in mind.

How do I care for my pottery?
Hand washing is best, but unless noted otherwise, pieces are generally safe for the dishwasher and microwave.

Is everything food safe?
I use glazes that are labeled food safe whenever possible. That said, I’m a one-woman shop—not a testing lab—so I can’t guarantee every item is 100% food safe. If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out before purchasing.

Something I wanted is sold out—will you make more?
Probably not. I may make something similar, but no two pieces are ever the same. I don’t repeat designs often. Every piece is a one-off, made for the joy of creating, not mass production.

Do you sell in stores?
Nope! I sell primarily at local markets and festivals around Central Virginia. Check out my Events page to see where I’ll be next.

How long does shipping take?
I usually ship within 2–3 days of your order. From there, it typically takes 3–5 business days to arrive (within the U.S.).

Why is shipping so expensive?
Pottery is heavy and fragile, which means it needs serious packaging to arrive safely. I do my best to keep shipping costs as low as possible while protecting your piece.

Why doesn’t my item match the colors on my screen?
Screens vary, so colors might look slightly different in person. I try to photograph each item as accurately as possible, but keep in mind your device might show things a bit warmer, cooler, or more saturated than real life.

Do you accept returns or refunds?
I don’t accept returns unless an item arrives damaged. Please read descriptions carefully and review all photos before purchasing. Handmade means a little wobbly, a little wonky, and a lot of heart.
